Method

Students will participate one-on-one with an instructor in 60-minute sessions once per week. The program starts with groundwork that allows students to develop a relationship with the horse they are linked to. By designating the same horse and instructor every session, we give the student more structure and the opportunity to build a stronger trust relationship. The students will slowly work their way into riding while still enhancing their bond with the horse. Each student will also participate in a farm chore at the end of each session in order to develop work ethic and improve his/her self-esteem and self-confidence.

Specific behavioral and emotional issues such as anger, anxiety, decreased self-esteem, impatience, and trauma will be targeted with interventions to allow each student to work through his/her respective issues. SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-based) goals are created at the beginning of the semester to allow the student, parent, and instructor to develop an individualized plan for the student to follow and achieve by the end of the semester. Students learn body language and social cues with the horses that they are later able to implement in their everyday lives. They also learn mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing exercises, being "present" in the here and now, and developing senses/listening skills in an environment with minimal interference.
