Method
The Reading Warriors Program is a 12-week program that happens twice a year (spring and fall). The students participate in 60-minute sessions that include a designated ranch animal and our Orton-Gillingham tutor. Students and caregivers who need more support with reading skills have the opportunity to meet with our tutor weekly, biweekly, or monthly for consultations, one-on-one sessions, or parent workshops. Once a month, families can also attend Reading Day at the ranch to spend time reading to the horses and ponies.
The tutoring sessions are tailored to each child's needs and include time with animals at the ranch. Incorporating animal work into reading sessions not only creates a natural reward, but fosters a sense of pride and responsibility in each student.
In addition to providing tutoring services at the ranch, the Reading Warriors program will facilitate parent and teacher workshops to promote dyslexia awareness, and to equip teachers and parents with simple strategies to use at home and in the classroom to help meet the needs of readers at all ability levels. The program will also foster positive relationships with elementary schools in the surrounding counties by implementing school visits with one of our Reading Ambassador Ponies.
